The Factory Hub

This proposal focuses on the redevelopment and transformation of the former Ladopoulos E.G.L. paper factory in Patras. The core concept intertwines memory and innovation. The factory is envisioned as a "mediator", reinterpreting its historical essence to establish a dynamic research laboratory. This facility will integrate public services, business activities, informal engagements, and leisure, aspiring to become a model for Patras.

The project aims to construct a significant complex for the local community, hosting activities with broad relevance. The goal is to create a technologically advanced attraction, fostering "smart" ecosystem interconnections. These connections will accentuate the site's unique features, ensuring flexibility, adaptability, and durability. The design emphasizes ecological building materials' aesthetic potential and promotes sociability and development.

The existing building's redesign includes creating two atriums-squares for natural ventilation and lighting. The first atrium, Labour Square (PL1), retains its perimeter structure but replaces the roof with electrically controlled shading systems. The second atrium, after removing some structures, becomes the Water Square (PL9). The interplay between open public spaces and surrounding buildings enhances accessibility and habitation quality. Additional squares, like Innovation (PL2), Theater (PL3), Music (PL4), Memory (PL5), Museum (PL6), Paper (PL7), and Sand (PL8), further the porous character of the design. This approach fosters activity osmosis, erasing boundaries and fostering hybrid social experiences.

An expanded amusement park on the north side addresses the need for open space for theater and other outdoor activities (cinema, concerts, etc.). The south side proposes integrating the church courtyard with the complex and a planned nursery-kindergarten. On the east, a protected road provides theater access. On the west, main entrances to the new public space and New Park facilities are established. A low-traffic road opens at the southern end, maintaining access from the old factory entrance. The northern end connects to the Southern Port and regional rail networks.

The existing infrastructure will be repurposed. Buildings K1, K2, K3, and K7 will cater to public needs, housing regional governmental bodies. Buildings K5 and K6 will host startups and tech incubators. The museum will occupy the south wing of the K9 building, with K4 dedicated to Innovation & Knowledge Transfer Exhibitions. K8 will transform into a gastronomic hub, while K10 becomes a versatile space for creative activities across ages, featuring an upgraded exterior for energy efficiency and visibility.

New structures include 'Activators', small, movable energy units enhancing public areas through informal actions. A main parking area is planned beneath the north side's public space. Facilities for bicycle parking and charging stations for electric vehicles are included. Plantings will form green clusters, aesthetically and ecologically enhancing the urban environment.
